Episode 5 recap
September 29, 2008 at 8:19 pm | In Uncategorized | 5 Comments
I know I’m just about SUPER late, but please excuse me. This would’ve been up by Saturday, but I had to go to New York (and seeing all those fashion boutiques did NOT help the guilt I was feeling for keeping you all up), and I’ve had work for just about every day since then. I’ll try to make sure this tardiness doesn’t happen again!
So the episode starts out with all the girls coming into the house from their last elimination panel, and they’re all staring in awe and commenting on Elina’s bikini shot (which I’ve to say, is extraordinarily stunning, and kind of gives off a Paulina vibe without the bitchiness, doesn’t it?). Hannah, Marjorie, and Analeigh are off in one room, where Analeigh is talking about what it felt like being in the bottom two, and then the lovely Hannah goes on to say that she’s wallowing and giving herself a pity party. Oh, that’s an amazing way to treat someone who comforted you when the majority of the girls were “critiquing” you and calling you a racist. Although I had hopes for Hannah pre-show, she’s really being an annoying brat on screen.
TYRA MAIL!
“Tomorrow your model dreams could end up in the gutter! Love, Tyra” It’s not like this has a morbid theme to it or anything.
The girls go to a bowling alley called the Lucky Strike to find Ms. Jay waiting for them to critique their runway walk through the bowling arena. So, let’s run down through each girl as respectively shown:
Isis: Slipped in the beginning! I actually had high hopes for her walk, since I saw it via YouTube pre-show, but jeez. She recovered very well and did the confident strut, to which Ms. Jay interviewed that she walked like she was on ice. “How convenient! IS- (pronounced like “ice”)-is!
Analeigh: Went to slow for Ms. Jay’s (as well as my) liking. She looked beautiful walking down it, but she looked solemn and like something was bothering her. She was a perfect contestant for the ever-returning “wind in the hair,” however.
Marjorie: Had a walk that was “shopping mall” rather than runway walk. She has the perfect figure for it, but she’s a bit short, isn’t she? I worry for her potential to make it far in the industry (if she carries on with it whether she wins or not) because of it.
Hannah: I wouldn’t call that a “walk.” It was like she was had an imaginary treadmill with her, and imaginary old woman poking her with a cane in the back, and some imaginary books on her head, and was trying to keep the posture. I haven’t seen someone walk so badly in such a long time. She shouldn’t have tried so hard.
McKey: didn’t show much at all, but she looked awesome in what she was wearing. Her walk was a little conventional, and she looked a little lost, though. She has a problem with controlling her shoulders, and staying in balance, I caught.
Lauren Brie: walks like a porn start. She swerves so blatantly and her chest was out of control. The face, as usual, was still pretty high-end.
Clark: showed very little, but she seemed to be fine, actually (although it only showed her torso). Her face was in balance.
Sheena: very confident walk. It was a tiny bit bouncy, but I still liked it.
Joslyn: It’s no secret that I have nothing but the utmost disdain for this girl. She swerved well with her torso, but I have no idea what the hell she was thinking lifting her arms up high like she was Cleopatra. She’s not elegant enough to pull that off, in my opinion. Ms. Jay commented she has what it takes, but her energy just needs to be pulled back a little bit.
Samantha: doesn’t know how to walk, simply put. Not as bad as Hannah’s, but she needs to look at herself in the mirror as she practices her walk someday. She looked cute, though, and it was amusing to see Ms. Jay slide a bowling ball between her legs.
Elina: this girl is gorgeous, no doubt about it. However, she looks like she is about to get you back for not calling her after the night before. She is stomping and is way too analytical (and she reminds me of C2’s April). As much as I love Elina for her face, I have to unfortunately (and sadly) say that she does not have the typical runway body. I hope that doesn’t come as a problem for her in this competition.
Mmkay, so the girls back home, and the girls are helping each other (and Hannah, especially) on how to look better with their walks. Cool points for being nice girls, eh? Well, then Clark and Lauren Brie are on their couch, and they’re complimenting McKey’s face and Elina’s face, which they emphasize is gorgeous, and they’d kill for her eyebrows. Stunning as they are, I’m not ready to end lives myself for them, haha. They then talk about Isis and how she’s not doing well, nor is going to do well anymore due to the fact that she still has her masculine-type body. Clark says that she thinks it’s about time for Isis to go home (which I agree with), and that modeling’s not for her (which I do not agree with). Although she’s a staple to the transgender community for being on the show and being part of the mainstream, she has absolutely been boring almost all of us fans. Her first picture was great, but the rest? Enough. We see Isis talking to Joslyn and McKey about how people would portray her and how no one really has the right to say what’s right and wrong with her decisions, and they’re just having a comforting time. Anyone notice that these girls are not very bitchy towards each other?! I’m actually liking that. Anyway, I loved when McKey said “You’re one of us, Isis.” It warmed my heart, and then commercials came. Cool points for her.
The girls get picked up and arrive to what looks like a big banking facility for their runway challenge. They’re representing Jeremy Scott (whose portfolio complimented him quite well, in my opinion), he comes out to say they’re doing a vintage bank scene, etc. Girls practice their walk before the time comes, and then they’re told they’re going to be in blindfolds as Mr. Jay and Ann Shoket (ugh) come out. She says that the winner will be having a photoshoot with two other girls that’s going to be put in Seventeen Magazine (those two words together are enough to make me hurl). So it comes time for the runway challenge, which had a cool design and a cool starting ceremony where a thief-like actor opens a vault for the girls to come out of. Rating the girls’ walks in their respective order.
Oh, but before I start, let me say that the clothes they were wearing were hideous to me. The only ones I liked were Hannah’s and Analeigh’s. But I guess some justice has been done, for Joslyn got a very tacky one to fit her.
Elina: worked it very well. She had the green blouse with her reddish hair and the black blindfold, and she looked like she came right out of an old movie. She looked quite graceful.
Analeigh: looked wonderful. She moved her hand and her hip in a very suave but quick motion, and when she turned and made her hand motion with that open mouth, I was about to scream “FIERCE!” But then I remembered that I wasn’t Tyra.
Samantha: I did not know what was up with this girl, but seriously, someone help her. She looked like she just got out of a hospital bed, where she hasn’t walked in ages, and she was trying to walk while looking like she’s been doing it every single day. It was really quite horrible. And at the end, when she lifted the dress (although not too much), was just face-palmed. She did look semi-graceful when she looked up, though. Could’ve been a good picture, although what she was wearing was ugly.
Sheena: WORKED IT! The outfit wasn’t too bad either.
Clark: looked a little crooked, but still managed. When she posed at the end, I almost saw Katarzyna, but with less high-fashion demeanor to her.
Lauren Brie: her outfit was CRAPPY! She walked well in it, though (or so, I thought). She moved and swerved like she was a robot, and I thought it was cool.
Marjorie: I think she did a pretty lousy job. Her dress looked constricting, though, but she didn’t keep in balance, and she looked rather nervous, to no surprise.
Joslyn: actually did very well. In my opinion, she was the second-best behind Sheena. She was soft in her walk, and wasn’t dramatic, like she said she wasn’t trying to be. Outfit sucked, though.
Hannah: I wanted to pause the show, go to Wal-Mart (avoiding the CoverGirl aisle so that I wouldn’t see Whitney’s face, of course), buy some aluminum foil, go back home, and then chew on it to get rid of the pain of watching Hannah go down that runway. I wouldn’t even try to demean the downright crappiness of it by trying to describe it (those of you who haven’t seen it MUST). And as if though I thought the walk wasn’t uber-horrendous enough, the pose at the end just made me feel SO bad for her. And unfortunately, she had the very best dress (in my view).
Isis: awesome walk, as expected. I wish she didn’t cross her legs so much, though.
McKey: she gives off this tough-girl tomboy thing, doesn’t she? I love it, and she brought it to her walk. If it was in another dress (should it be called that?) It was shower curtains with a pole on her shoulders, which actually looked quite cool. It probably wouldn’t have worked with another one, but she looked like a dominatrix and like a model. Very well-executed on her part.
Mmkay, runway is done. Long story short (I don’t feel like going through the critique), Hannah was eliminated. Choice well-made. We’re seeing SO much of that on this cycle, and it’s so incredibly rare! Of course, before she went, she had to mention that she was from Alaska yet one more time (a drink, on the house!). Joslyn picked Sheena and Isis to do the shoot with her, and although I can’t bring the picture for you, it was just her sitting on what looked like a white throne in a studio like a queen, while Sheena and Isis stood next to her on each side of the chair. Joslyn looked like crap, Isis looked rather feminine for once, and Sheena looked great, but what she was wearing made her looked wide.
We’re back at home, and TYRA MAIL! “This competition is deep! Some will rise above and some will go under. Love, Tyra.” This certainly wouldn’t have to do anything with water, right? Right?!
It’s the morning and Mr. Jay comes (not looking so great in that lifeguard wear, in my opinion), to tell the girls they’re shooting in the house, or at least, backyard in the pool. I knew it was water! I didn’t think anyone else would get that reference, I’m so proud of myself! Photo shoot highlights:
-Nigel Barker is the photographer. It’s been a bit, right? The black-and-white shots of last cycle (with the final four) is rather forgettable for the most part, because only Anya did it right.
-McKey did well. She interviewed that she only has two looks, and how she was doing weird twitching things “but it wasn’t very attractive.” She’s so weird that I can’t help but love her so much. She’s starting to override Marjorie as my favorite.
-Joslyn didn’t do so well (yay!). She seemed to look like she was drowning.
-Clark did the best she’s done in the cycle, and was “saying a lot with her eyes,” as Mr. Jay said. He also commented that he thought she was flirting with Nigel.
-Marjorie looked awesome, like a different species. She had a lot of body language with her, and an evil look throughout the photoshoot.
-Isis was worrying about the tape and the water, for she had three pairs of undergarments, and didn’t want a certain thing getting out, if you know what I mean. She struggled throughout the whole shoot, and her eyes were too asymmetrical.
-Analeigh did wonderfully, and was doing very elegant body motions. The bottom-two experience was a wake-up call for her, and she said “Yo, it’s an awesome feeling” at the end. I’m loving this girl’s personality right now.
-Sheena looked like an amazingly beautiful Asian woman in an old warrior movie. She looked amazing.
-Lauren Brie’s eyes looked amazing close-up, of course. She did very well.
-Elina struggled through the shoot, and Nigel was let down.
-Sam was very avant-garde with her body, and Mr. Jay was fond of what she did.
Back at home, TYRA MAIL! Of course, you’re meeting up with the judges, blah, blah, blah. And of course, Elina’s picture comes back up and the girls act like it’s one of those moving pictures on Harry Potter. “Yeah, Elina, give it up!” “Bye, Elinaaaaa!” She looks distressed, this girl. She goes talking to Sheena about her struggle and how she was feeling down (these girls REALLY confide in each other so much, I’m glad to see that they’re not being very bitchy, and the ones that are, are being sent home). Karma is really a driving force this cycle. We see Isis on the phone talking to her godfather, and cool points for him for being so supportive of her as she talks about how she’s struggling in the competition. I like Isis, I really, really do, but it’s her time.
Nothing interesting happened at panel besides the fact that Paulina found Marjorie’s awesome picture to be very scary and didn’t like the out-of-the-ordinary thing, and Jeremy Scott was thrashing on Sam’s performance on the challenge, seeming like he was trying to kill her with words. Tyra was commending him on how passionate he was for being so blunt, saying that models are representing the designer and it’s their reputation on the line (is it me or…or does this sound like the old, seasoned, professional Tyra? We need to see more of her again!).
Call-out order/elimination
-Clark. She really deserved it, her picture was absolutely amazing.
-Analeigh. From bottom two to top two! She did very well.
-Lauren Brie. Her pictures are my favorite of the cycle. The one she took this week is still in a tough match with Clark’s picture over my personal favorite of the shoot.
-Sheena. Yet another wonderful shot. And she’s such a great contestant. Just the perfect Asian to recover that tragic hurt to the Asian community by Gina.
-McKey
-Marjorie. This girl seems to be called much later than she should nowadays, anyone realize that?
-Joslyn. This girl seems to be called much EARLIER than she should be, anyone realize THAT?
-Elina. I was almost scared she would be on the bottom two this early.
-Samantha. Her picture was nice, but that runway walk…well-deserved bottom-two placement, in my opinion.
-Isis was eliminated. It was her time, and I won’t argue against it.
Now for the pictures in order of my favorite to least-favorite:

Clark. She improved SO much this week. This photo is phenomenal, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. The refelection is great, and so is the real expression.

Like I said, there’s a tough wrestle of whether this one is my favorite or not, with Clark’s. The swan thing with the hand is so symmetrical and perfect, and her eyes are deadly and evil. This is one of the best pictures in ANTM history, if you ask me. One of the very best photo shoots, too.

Sheena. Asian warrior is what I see. She looks unbelievable! Like she’s going to kill you if you step on her turf. Again, put it down as one of my favorites in ANTM history (three in one photo shoot is rare enough as it is).

Paulina said it looks like Quasimodo from Notre Dame. I agree, but it looks like a very editorial, edgy female Quasimodo, and that’s why I love it so much. She looks like a demon who resides in the water and has a temper. Perfect.

Analeigh. I never understood the whole “You’re an ice skater, so you should be making that perfect as a model!” Ice and ground are two different things, but she took that elegance and put it in this photograph, and she looks great. The hair could either take a bit of the attention from her eyes (as well as her legs), or adds to it, depending on your perspective (I’m the latter).

Very alien-esque. Nothing wrong with this at all.

McKey. To me, this is her least-best photograph, and it’s still very good. The hand could’ve looked more ferocious, and I’m not sure whether to like what looks like her nose is surfing the water, and not staying in one place. Looks odd, but sort of adds to it.

Elina. Disappointing, but not all THAT bad. Tyra gave her some good advice (she’s coming back, you guys!), and I wish she had the knowledge beforehand.

Joslyn. This isn’t a biased review (I’m not like that with pictures), so don’t worry. Almost all the girls did wonderfully in this shoot, and she was just one that wasn’t. Her body movement looks just like her bikini one, awkward and nothing near fashion. Her expression is pretty blank, and there’s nothing special about this shot.

Isis. Where’s that girl we saw the first episode? I honestly do not believe that it was a fluke. I just think all of the photo shoots were uncomfortable for her (one bikini, and one where she had to wear a bikini yet again?). A shame she won’t get a chance for improvement, but I wish she wasn’t so bland for what she was going through. It was her time to go, though.

Oh, and this was posted by Dorian. Sorry! (I won’t fall off-track like I did this week).

Um…NO ONE did that paparazzi photo shoot right.
And hasn’t Claire already partially recovered the tragic hurt to the Asian community?
.
Okay, so in order of cool points [NAME (total #, change since last week)]…
ELINA (11, +2) – I love this girl so much, and she is definitely the new April, except a little sexier and with a hint of Kim c5. Her photo was disappointing; I hope she doesn’t pull a…uh…a Claire? A Marvita? A Rebecca? Help me out here!
SHEENA (10) – This girl is great. While I don’t necessarily see the fierceness in her photo, I’m glad she was called so high.
ANALEIGH (9, +5) – She is getting better and better. She’s so sweet! I just want to cuddle her… Um, anyway, I love her photo.
MARJORIE (8, +2) – Yeah, she is getting called out so much later than she should. I wish she weren’t so diffident.
SAMANTHA (7, +4) – Say what you will; I like her. She’s just so cute! And while she needs a major runway lesson, her photo was great. I see a lot of potential.
MCCKEY (6, +2) – I wish they showed her more; she’s very, very cool. And about her photo, Elyse’s snake beauty shot, anyone?
ISIS (6, +2) – Damn. She really screwed it up. I’ll still love her forever.
LAUREN BRIE (4, +2) – Her photo is the best of the week as far as I’m concerned. Love it! I think she’s the new CariDee.
JOSLYN (4, +1) – The poor girl’s losing it for me. Her photos have declined, and her personality (as much as I used to like it) is boring me. I don’t like her photo. Second-worst.
HANNAH (-1, -1) – I’m glad she’s gone. She just wasn’t right for the competition. I’m sure she had good intentions; it was just the way she went around doing things that made her come off as bitchy.
CLARK (-2) – I applaud her amazing photo this week, but I really don’t like her.
.
So, here’s MY call-out: Lauren Brie, Clark, Samantha, Analeigh, Marjorie, McKey, Elina, Sheena, Joslyn, Isis.
.
About next week’s elimination, here are my predictions:
POSSIBLE: Analeigh, Joslyn, Samantha
FAIRLY UNLIKELY: Elina, Marjorie
UNLIKELY: Clark, McKey, Sheena
VERY UNLIKELY: Lauren Brie
It’s very hard to predict now that all of the filler girls have either become good or been eliminated. (I do, unfortunately, believe that Analeigh and Samantha were brought in as filler. They have since proven to be otherwise.)

Anyone notice how the eliminations so far are just like last season. The first girl is someone who no one really liked and sort of bitchy. Which was Kim and Sharaun. Next was the girl who had dullness in their eyes. Which was Atalya and Nikeysha. Next was the girl who was pretty in her photos. Which were Allison and Brittany. Next was the girl who had something to do with the previous cycle. Which were Marvita and Isis. Finally this weeks elimnee. The girl who was “too pretty” and relied on pretty. Also isn’t weird that like last cycle the girl in the bottom 2 for episode 5 gets the first callout in the next episode. Which were Sam and Whitney. Don’t get me wrong I like Sam So my prediction is that lauren brie, marjorie, or analeigh get eliminated and elina is in the bottom 2 with them. Because last cycle one of the fan favorites got eliminated. And the girl who was not a girly girl was in the bottom two with her.

Also just like last cycle the girl in the bottom 2 started at the top of the pack and is slowly falling. Which were Claire and Joslyn.
